Windows update shows critical updates but will not download and install them. My other Windows 7 systems download and install them fine on the same connection. What exactly happens when you click on Install updates button?

Which updates are you trying to install? Were you able to use windows updates without any issues earlier? Any recent changes made on your computer? Do you get any error messages?

Check for error messages in event viewer. If you find any error messages then post back the exact error message so that we can help you better.

Also check update history. Click on start. In the search box type eventvwr. Now click on Application under Event Viewer local.

Now look for event log on right hand side of the Event Viewer windows. Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may go ahead and disable or uninstall the same. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights. Click Start, type msconfig. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. The Use Original Boot.

On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all. Click OK, and then click Restart.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart. Make sure to enable those security software's on the computer after checking. Then try installing it. Was this reply helpful?
